Cleaning Ice Dams Off A Fargo Home

Sometimes, we get requests for maintenance issues around the home that do not fit into the normal category of cleaning and maintenance.  We had a request to clean the an ice dam off the roof of a home in Fargo.  Usually, this amounts to a band of ice near the eaves of a home, usually on older homes with air leaks. This creates a situation that melts and freezes repeatedly, causing ice build up near the edge of the roof.  Possible problems occur including roof damage from ice that pushes under the shingles, as well as structural damage from the weight of the ice.

In the pictures below, you will see an extreme case of ice build up, and pictures do not really do this situation justice, since I was too close for you to really gain any perspective.

ice-dam1.jpgThese pictures  show the roof and some ice that remained after I cleared it off.  The ice is about 30 inches THICK!! Just under 3 feet of ice covered the roof along a 8 foot section.  In all, this area had an accumulation of around 250-300 pounds of ice.  I was able to remove it using a large hammer and a lot of elbow grease.

So, don’t let this happen to your roof.  Give us a call at 701-306-7026 if you would like more information or visit Big Fish Service Company
